How to Write a Cover Letter

How to write a cover letter that will actually get your resume read

When I am recruiting I love when someone sends me a well written cover letter. They are so much more interesting to read than resumes and they give you a sense of the applicant’s personality. However, when it is a repetition of the resume it become redundant and irritating to read. When writing your cover letter, you want it to engage the reader to actually want to spend more than 6 seconds skimming your resume. It’s your letter to the company saying “I actually like what you are doing and here is why you want to talk to me and get to know me. I would be a great fit for your team.”

The template above shows the layout of a cover letter in the simplest of forms.

Below is a sample to show what kind of text you want to write in your cover letters (to the left). AND an example cover letter for a Digital Strategist job position (right).

What to Include In a Cover Letter

Example Cover Letter

It might feel painful to constantly write cover letters when applying to jobs. You may feel tempted to just say “Hey! Please just read my resume I am qualified and I need to make an income to afford the cost of living.” But if you find a company or position you really want it becomes a lot easier to write a cover letter.

And once you have created a strong cover letter, if you are applying to similar positions, you can use the same letter and tweak and adjust some of the content.

The goal is not to have to write hundreds of personalized cover letters and drain yourself on company research. The goal is to write a couple really good ones for positions you actually want.
